What width Skateboard Deck do I need?
Choosing the right size skateboard deck is never easy. There is one thing which has helped us size decks over the years. Inches, all decks are measured in inches. For example 8.00” or 8.25” these numbers relate to how wide the skateboard is. Typically the smaller your feet the smaller deck you should start with. For example, a size UK9 shoe would be well suited to an 8.00" - 8.25” deck. This will allow for ease of turning, plenty of room to move your feet whilst skating and when & if you get around to learning flip tricks it’ll provide enough room to catch your kickflips for example. Though a lot of sizing comes down to personal preference. Through skating your friend's boards, trying new sizes and just skating in general you’ll quickly determine which size you like. Some people never settle and will continuously change the size of the skateboard deck they skate.
8.125” Skateboard Decks
An 8.125 inch wide skateboard deck is the perfect middle ground for both street and transition skateboarding. Being versatile in both the air and manoeuvring around a bowl. Being on the thinner side of the skateboard spectrum this deck will flip quicker than most but it will also provide sufficient room for foot placement if transition skating is your thing. Here at North Street Skate our 8.125” skateboards are always in high demand and our stock levels keep up with the market demand. We supply decks from brands such as Sour Solution, Drawing Boards, The National Skateboard Co, Girl Skateboards, Chocolate Skateboards. All of which feature an 8.125” width. Each skateboard deck will differ in shape depending on manufacturer and also the wheel base will differ. We provide as much information on each skateboard to ensure you get the correct deck or if you are looking to switch it up from a previous shape /style from before.
8.125" Skateboard Deck Concave
The width of your skateboard has no effect on the concave, this is pre-determined by the manufacturer when pressing the deck in the factory. Though you can find that batch pressed decks vary. If your skateboard was the top deck the concave will be higher than the bottom but this will only be a very slight deviation and is commonly nothing to worry about unless you have a specific shape and size you have learnt to love.
The concave of a skateboard deck refers to the depth of the curve in the width of the deck. A low/flat concave skateboard deck will provide, what feels like, a larger surface area and will be much easier to perform shuv-it tricks on. A high concave deck will flip/rotate easier with less effort as the curvature of the deck will aid in creating the flicking action required to perform flip tricks.
