Who is Chocolate Skateboards
Who is Chocolate Skateboards
Established in 1994, Chocolate Skateboards is a professional skateboard company. Chocolate is the sister company to Girl and was almost named “sister” but more about that later.
Many professional skaters started to notice Girl and how strong the company was looking. With an ever-growing roster, it didn’t take long before the Girl team was unable to fit in one Van for their Tours. Sadly Chico Brenes was the one who took the hit to push Rick and Mike to look into another team. Chico had arrived at the car park, bags packed and excited to go on tour with his team, when he was told there was no room in the Van. After very little deliberation Mike and Rick decided they couldn’t let Chico not get on the team. 9 months later the skateboard industry was given the gift of Chocolate, with Chico being the main focal point of the team at the start.
The OG Chunk Logo was originally drawn and designed by Evan Hecox. The artistic direction of Chocolate falls in the hands of Andy Jenkins. However, many of the brand's deck series have been drawn and continue to be drawn by Evan.
Although they are separate companies and have different teams, graphics, and even websites. Both Girl and Chocolate are distributed from the same company, along with Royal Trucks, Lakai Limited Footwear, and Crailtap. It is also not uncommon to see Chocolate team skaters on Girl skateboard decks and vice-versa.
Chocolate Skateboards Decks
Pressed and prepped in the Dailan Huahong factory. Chocolate’s skateboard decks feature the traditional 7-ply construction with Canadian Maple being used for the 7 sheets of ply within the deck. Within each catalog, we’re treated to a different version of the OG Chunk team decks. This can vary from Solid colours to veneer and even laser engraved chunk logos.
Chocolate has also brought us the “chunk the world” series. This series features the name of a town/city or state on it where a popular skate shop exists. For example, Dublin has been featured due to the hard work put in by the guys at High Rollers Dublin.
As stated before Evan Hecox’s art features on 90% of the Chocolate decks. He is responsible for bringing us the OG chunk logos. Evan has also drawn up the 20-year anniversary decks which can be seen below along with a line of decks within every catalog. His style is extremely recognisable and popular. The most recent and notable series from Evan has been the World Taxi Series. Featuring the artwork of taxis all over the world giving Chocolate the ‘well-traveled’ vibe.
Crailtap has kindly provided the “Crail’s Complete Shape Guide” this app lets you find out the particulars about the deck you enjoy the most. You’ll also discover “who’s onboard?”. Finding out which pro skates which shape or has helped develop it and the shapes specific features.

The Chocolate Team
As stated in the intro Chocolate was formed due to the Girl roster being pretty full already. Also for the fact, Chico didn’t make it onto the van. Without this incident, happening Chocolate may never have been born. Though the original intention was never to call the brand Chocolate. Initially, Mike and Rick had planned to call the sister company exactly that “sister”. Once World Industries caught wind of this the actually claimed the rights to the brand name “sister” in an attempt to put a halt to Girl’s threat to what was considered as ‘their market’
To this date Chocolate Skateboards still holds an extremely strong roster, consisting of:
- Chris Roberts
- Kenny Anderson
- Jesus Fernandez
- Justin Eldridge
- Vincent Alvarez
- Stevie Perez
- Raven Tershy
- Yonnie Cruz
Chocolate’s team has always featured in Girl’s feature-length videos over the years. Though they have released their own Videos.
- Hot Chocolate (2004)
- A Little Chunk of Chocolate (2006)
- Pretty Sweet (2012)
- T.O.N.Y Tour (2019)
